ICAM 40 Projects

Week 7:

Data Mapping: Stocks

I represented trading prices of Martha Stewart Living (MSO), General Electric (GE) and values of the NASDAQ as the pitches of triangular shaped audio waves. My goal was to make an audible painting of stock information. A little reverb and noise pulls the values together, representing a month of trade fluctuations (specifically last January) in a minute's time.

Criticism:

I stayed too true to the data values to force any meaning into the tones themselves. It would have been a little more interesting to shift the pitch and stereo image of speech, or anything else for that matter, than a non musical, semi-sine wave.

Final:

I have no clue. I want to work in sound and might go as far to do a musical piece. I do like how the last project worked out.

A couple thoughts:

Real time noises. Implementation would be a tough one, but I could match SigAlert data with song tempos/intensity for driving. Or surf conditions. Or a web content filter that controls a media player.

Real time film scoring. I could get a band together to create a film score that responds to a work without planning of dynamics or musical themes.
